You are probably looking for a new apartment for closer proximity to the office or you're looking to get an apartment to build your new family. It is a big move I must admit, but before you make that move, there are many things you need to consider. Being in a new neighbourhood could be worrisome, especially in terms of security.

The good thing is, you came across this piece today before making that big decision.

You can take steps, both before and after you move in, to improve your home security

Before paying for an apartment, or signing that agreement form, here are a few things you should do;

To examine potential security risks, do some research on the apartment complex and the surrounding neighbourhood.

  • What are the crime statistics in the neighbourhood?
  • Have any recent break-ins been disclosed by the landlord or landlady?
  • What is the distance between the nearest police station, fire station and the apartment?
  • Is the apartment gated, preventing non-residents from entering, or is it accessible from the street?
  • Is the apartment complex well-lit? Is there any place where an invader could go unnoticed?
  • Do the apartment's doors and windows have the appropriate locks?

Make sure you walk around the apartment and surrounding areas. The location of the apartment, such as the ground floor, may change security concerns.

So what happens after you have moved in?

Make efforts to improve the security of your apartment.

  • Doors are a typical point of entrance for burglars. To make the door more difficult to kick down, reinforce striking plates with longer screws. You should also install a smart lock. However, before buying a smart lock, you should be sure it fits your needs. There are wireless smart locks that require internet(smart home locks) and others that don't. • Burglars are particularly attracted to sliding doors. Reinforce any sliding glass doors and, if possible, replace their lock mechanism.
  • Keep your valuables hidden from view. Crooks are aware of all the common hiding places, so invest in a safe to safeguard your belongings.
  • Leaving lights on or off all day can be a telltale sign that no one is home. You may use home automation to establish timers for your lights to give the impression that someone is home, even if you aren't.
  • Home security systems have been shown to discourage burglars. You can keep your apartment safe with a professionally monitored home security system that is monitored 24 hours a day, seven days a week from the convenience of your phone. Alternatively, you can have security personnel monitor live CCTV footage.
